Springtime Wedding Cakes

There’s a spring in my step today, lovely Sunshine Coast brides, because Spring has officially sprung! Has anyone noticed how many springtime puns are so very readily available to us all? Typically I’d cringe at the cheese of it all, but when it comes to this most happy of seasons, I think it’s simply an occasion to embrace it.

It’s not only the season of Springtime here in Australia, but it is now officially wedding season! This is hands down our busiest time of the year as thousands descend upon the Sunshine Coast to host or attend weddings galore. Each of these occasions requires the traditional celebratory wedding reception centrepiece of a wedding cake.  Not merely a dessert, but a symbolic representation of the first joint act together as a married couple, the cutting of the cake is a momentous moment for your wedding day.

Approaching the Spring season, we called upon local Sunshine Coast wedding cakes extraordinaire, Ellana Haddrill, of SweetP Cakes and Cookies to share her predictions for Springtime wedding trends of the cake variety.

Cakes and Springtime… Best. Day. Ever.

Poetic, enchanting and dreamy watercolour accents

For the romantic couples, we will see edible washes of colour over traditional white cakes offering a light touch and freehand style looseness.  Brush-stokes and transparent pigments offering subtle graduations of colour. Inspired by contemporary artists penning beautiful quotes, we may even see small quotes painted delicately to icing covered cakes offering gestures of love or initials of couples adding a personal and romantic touch.

Foodie inspired designs

Style savvy and eco-conscious couples will see a continued interest in the farm-to-table feel.  Think seasonal fruits dipped in gold the use of fragrant herbs, edible flowers and fruiting vines with gold leaf delicately applied. We will also continue to see cakes featuring deliciously applied icing drips in varieties of flavours.  I think we will also see a trend on cake trios and cake sisters – smaller cakes of all different sizes and flavors featured on long tables amongst draping greenery.DSC_7436

Organic with elevated, chic and glam

I think we will see a emergence of lots of blooms with wild foliage, foraged branches and vines on Cakes rather than the rustic feel of last season. I can see a more farm-fresh and organic look. I think we will also see an appearance of “old fashioned” flowers becoming “new” favorites like frilly carnations and chrysanthemums in pastel palettes.  Pops of gold, copper and brass will also feature on cakes this season inspired by heirlooms of a by-gone era and bringing a more vogue feel to last years vintage themes.DSC_4004
